In my placement at an elementary school, a girl with ASD that I support was talking to her teacher about one of the math tests she had just written a couple days ago. The teacher was asking her if she understood what a meter was. She was told to think about it and try to complete the parts of the math test she did not finish. I was asked to help her understand.
I was trying to help her understand how big a meter was by using a measuring tape. We then worked together on completing the rest of the questions. However, what my field ERW noticed was that I was providing her with too much help instead of letting her try to do it independently, especially since it was a test.
My field ERW then provided me with some tips on how to scaffold during a test without giving too much help. This will help the ERW and teacher really assess how the student is doing/ completing the required material.
During this experience, I felt a bit embarrassed and self-conscious that I had done something wrong. However, I will use this as a learning experience on how to be a better educational assistant.
